Dobson speaks truth concerning gambling

It is making a mess of my state, Mississippi. It is making a mess out of the nation. Preach, Brother Dobson!
...Dr. James Dobson is calling on lawmakers nationwide to take a strong stand against legalized gambling in America. Calling the rampant growth in gambling a "national disaster," the Focus on the Family chairman says all types of gambling is driven by greed -- and that makes it "morally bankrupt from its very foundation," he states. "If the nation's politicians don't fix this national disaster, then the oceans of gambling money with which Jack Abramoff tried to buy influence on Capitol Hill will only be the beginning of the corruption we'll see." And new ethics rules for Congress, he says, are nothing but a "Band-Aid fix." Dobson asserts the country needs "courageous office holders who will begin the process of shutting down lotteries, casinos, and other gambling outlets." A longtime opponent of gambling because of its damaging effect on families, Dobson has been critical of members of both major political parties for accepting campaign contributions from gambling interests. Its making a mess of YOUR state, huh?

News Flash!!! Its MY state too! I work hard for my money. If I want to put it down on the blackjack table, what business is it of yours? I would like an honest response, Matt. Why do you think its any of YOUR business?

Its not the Government's job to legislate morals (yours or anyone elses), just like its not the government's job to legislate personal responsibilty.

You think our nation's laws are based on the Bible? Explain. I think our laws, in particular the Bill of Rights, directly contradict the Bible....

You say that somebody's morals must dictate? I think it is only appropriate that I point out that a MAJORITY of Americans/Mississippians are in FAVOR of legalized gambling. So who's morals should dictate on this subject? The majority, or the minority?

The same goes for abortion. A MAJORITY of Americans are opposed to Roe v. Wade being overturned. Being that our country is governend "by and for the people", I guess we should just go with what a majority of the people want...

What you say to that, Marsha?

Kenny, I think you are right in stating that it is not the government job to legislate morality. The watering of the gospel message and liberalization of the Church has led to the lowering of moral standards across this whole country. But right and wrong does come from somewhere. That somewhere is the Word of God. He gave us morals. He told us not to murder (we have laws against that), He told us not to steal (we have laws against that), He told us not to commit adultery (we used to have laws against that in some states). If we did not have a God to tell us right from wrong would we know what was right and what was wrong? Our government was founded by men that believed that God's standards for right and wrong were a good starting point. I think Dr. Dobson is trying to get us to remember that.

And Kenny, I do hope that you will always have the right to donate your hard earned money to organized crime or to the church or cause of your choice.

Organized Crime? When did I ever say anything about organized crime?

Yeah, banning gambling will absolutely cause it to stop.

Remember how well Prohibition worked?

I can't buy booze on a Sunday but I'm 3 phone calls away from getting crystal meth delivered to my house 24/7.

I live in Utah. We & the Hawaiians don't allow legalized gambling.

Well, driving on black ice when half the state has moved here from California is gambling.

But our lack of gambling does not have much of an effect.

Our per capita income is below average, our school test scores are in the middle of the pack and we have as much crime as anywhere.

Wrong. The Bible is a mixed up book written by primative nomads. If we follow the Bible, slavery is okay. Being married to more than one wife is okay. Having relations with your father is okay (Lot and his daughters?). Murdering innocent women and children (remember "it is better to obey than to sacrifice"?) is okay with the god of the Bible. There are many wrong headed ideas in the Bible.

What we consider right and wrong has evolved over thousands of years. Slaves no longer obey their masters because we have evolved socially past that point.

Maybe we will even evolve to the point of total freedom where people will be allowed to go into casinos and make their mistakes instead of having some Christian "Big Brother" watching over them.

The open casinos have already taken in $50 million since the hurricane. It saddens me that soon they will be on land.
